Re: Tax pertaining to a Jointly Held Bank Account
Enclosed please find my check in the amount of $830.1 O. This sum is intended to
represent tax on ~ of 1/3 of a bank account owned jointly through the years by my
parents and myself. This account, established with M&T Bank, is identified by account
#13932500.
My father, Daniel 8tanley Barton (88#179-12-5385), died on March 2,2007. In
consultation with the 8tate Department of Revenue, I was advised to verify with the Bank
my co-ownership of this account and its value on my father's date of death. I was advised
further that, this having been done and in consideration of the change in number of
owners from three people to two, I must identify a sum equal to 4.5% of ~ of my
father's 1/3 ownership in this account, in order to prepare and present a check for the
Register of Wills.
I am grateful to you for your help to me in gaining closure in this matter.
