Dear Register of Wills:
Please be advised that I have been retained to represent the interests of Leona M. Fickel and
Nancy A. Crampton, the daughters and only children of Gilbert K. Shirk. Mr. Shirk died January 8,
2010. All of Mr. Shirk's assets are non probate in that his assets passed directly to either co-owners
or named beneficiaries of his assets. Therefore, a formal estate will not be opened. However,
inheritance taxes are owed on Mr. Shirk's portion of the non-probate assets. Enclosed is a check
made payable to the Register of Wills, Agent, in the amount of $3,700 for an estimate of inheritance
taxes that will be owed. The estimate is being tendered within 3 months of Mr. Shirk's death so that
his daughters will realize the 5% discount offered by the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue for the
early payment.
Since a formal estate has not and will not be opened, it is my understanding that a special file
number will need to be assigned to the matter so that the $3,700 in inheritance taxes is properly
credited and so Mrs. Fickel and Mrs. Crampton can file an Inheritance Tax Return once all of the
information regarding the value of the non-probate assets and the debts of the Decedent are known.
Should you require any additional information or documentation in order to accept and
properly apply the enclosed check for $3,700 to Mr. Shirk's Estate, please contact me directly. Thank
you.
