FINAL GUARDIANSHIP REPORT Director
FOR BORIS ORTENBERG
Report from Guardian of Person and Estate
Cumberland County of Aging
Person
On August 29, 3007 Judge Kevin Hess appointed the Cumberland County Aging and
Community Services as Permanent Plenary Guazdians of the Person and Estate of Boris
Ortenberg. Prior to the hearing he had be hospitalized at Holy Spirit Hospital when he was found
unresponsive in his apartment. He suffered from acute renal failure, severe dehydration,
uncontrolled hypertension. His past medical history included high blood pressure, coronary
artery disease, congestive heart failure, diabetes, renal failure, dyslipidemia and schizophrenia.
He was later admitted to the Claremont Nursing and Rehab Center where he resided at the time
of the heazing.
Mr. Ortenberg went out of the facility to get dialysis three days a week. At one point it was
discussed as to whether he should receive a permanent port for his dialysis. This was
recommended because Boris had a tendency to try to pull out the temporary port. After speaking
with the Surgeon it was decided that due to his health it would not be in his best interest to
undergo the surgery.
On September 12, 2007 Mr. Ortenberg was admitted to Carlisle Medical Regional Center The
catheter used for dialysis had become infected. We gave approval for a new one to be inserted.
He returned to Clazemont Nursing. Boris was again admitted to Carlisle Hospital due to an
infection and high fever, possibly neaz his heart. There was going to be a tube placed down his
esophagus to get a better look at his heart. He returned to Claremont but the problem was that
Boris kept pulling out the medic port and PIC line. There was a meeting with his physician,
nurse, the aging care manager and care manager Supv and RN from Aging and someone from
the home administration. It was determined that if he continued to pull out his catheter he would
go on comfort measures only.
He was later placed on Hospice. He passed away on Dec 29, 2007. Because the family wanted
him to receive a Jewish burial, Hollinger agreed to release the body to the Hetrick Funeral Home.

Estate
The Agency was responsible for cleaning out his apartment.
Funeral pre-arrangements were made with the Hollinger Funeral Home. Mr. Ortenberg will be
will be cremated due to his very limited funds. The issue of citizenship became a problem in
trying to apply for medical assistance.
A guardianship account was opened at M&T Bank with money that had been found in his
apartment. The main expenses were $1500 for the funeral, as well as medical bills, clothing and
one Verizon bill. After some bills were paid there was $2.36 remaining in his account.
Remainder of accounts were notified of his death with no remaining estate to pay the bills. A
copy of the check register is attached.
