On September 25, 2008, Judge Edward Guido appointed the Cumberlad Countffi@ .°
of Aging as temporary emergency Guardian of Person for Pauline Demler. Following the
appointment, Pauline was admitted to Claremont Nursing and Rehabilitaton Center. On
October 16, 2009 the Cumberland County Aging and Community Services was
appointed permanent Guardian of Person.
Ms. Demler's medical conditions at time of admission were coronary artery disease,
peripherial vascular disease, diabetes milletus, hypercholesterol, hypertension,
ischemic cardiomyopathy, gangrene right third toe, history of myocardia lnfarction (heart
attack). She was later diagnosed with dementia with delirium, depression, allergic
rhinitis, paranoia, hallucinations and chronic anemia.
In October 2013 Pauline seemed to be medically stable and doing well. She remained
on two anti-psychotic medications for hallucinations. In November she developed a
Urinary Tract Infection which was treated with an anti-biotic but she began to decline.
She stopped eating and drinking and became very lethargic.
A caseworker from Cumberland County Aging was able to track down a son, Edward,
and informed him of his mother's decline in health. He and another brother were able to
visit with their mother. They agreed to her having hospice services so a referral was
made. She seemed to enjoy the hospice services and started eating a little. The agency
also contacted the counselor at Houtzdale State Prison and requested they inform
another son, Dennis, who was a prisoner there, of his mother's decline.
Pauline was able to attend the Christmas party and seemed very happy and glad to be
at the activity. The Agency was informed by the home that Pauline had passed away on
December 27, 2013.
She had made funeral arrangements with Hoffman and Roth Funeral Home for her
cremation prior to the guardianship. Her ashes were ashes were sent to her daughter in
Texas.
