1 have personally inspected the pair of pistols which you have brought to us for appraisal and
describe and value [hem as follows:
MATCHED PAIR OF AUSTRIAN PERCUSSION TARGET/DUELLING PISTOLS SIGNED MATHIAS
NOWOTNY IN WIEN. CIRCA 1845-50. Consecutively numbered on the barrel tangs "1" and "2".
Multi groove rifled .50 caliber oc[agon, damascus barrels inlaid in silver on the top flats "MATHIAS
NOWOTNY IN WIEN" Lock plates signed forward of the hammers "NOWOTNY". Finely scroll
engreved locks, hammers, breech plugs and barrel tangs as well as the steel mounts. German silver
rec[angular shaped wrist and barrel wedge escutcheons. Double set triggers. Windage adjusuble
front sightr and elevation adjus[able rear sights. Finely figured half leng[h walnut checkered
s[ocks with Empire style Flattened butts ornately carved in a Floral motlf. Very good plus to fine
condition overall with traces of case hardening in the recesses about the hammers and on the
breeches of the barrels.Trigger guards with traces of original blue. Barrels with patinaied original
coin finish wiih very light wear. Stocks with the original varnish wi[h minor wear and scratches.
Hairline cracks in the wood at the lock plate screw bolsters. Wedge of the number "2" pistol
broken at[he rear of[he head. Triggers and sighcs in working order and locks function perfedly.
Both barrels have brigh[bores with very sharp riFling showing very little evidence of firing.
Mathias Nowotny (Novomy) worked independently in Vienna from the 1830's to 1852 or 1853
when he formed a partnership wiih Johann Springer. He was also established earlier in Leitmeritz,
Bohemia as is considered one of the finest Bohemian makers of the 19�^ Cenmry. �4750.
