HomeMy WebLinkAbout94-07080 .' COMMUNITY PROFILE In 1660, ten men from Dedham, led by Captain TI1oma.~ Willet, arrived in the area that is now Franklin, Mass. The Wampanoag Indians called the area "Wollomonopoag." TIle white selllers paid 35 pounds sterling to the Wampanoags for rights to the land. The precinct became an independent town during the Revolutionary War. TIle name originally selected was Exeter, but townspeople later decided to name their new town after Benjamin Franklin, and the petition was amended. Since the petition had heen approved by Wrentham, it passed easily through the General COUrl amI, on March 2, 1778, Ilw town's charter was approved hy the state. Town fathers wrote a leller to Franklin 10 give him the news--and to suggest that he might like to donate a church bell for the town's new meeting house. Franklin replied thaI he was, instead, sentling a gifl of hooks so the town might estahlish a library. "I consider sense more important than sound" Franklin wrote. ' Franklin is a town of about 20,000 population in an area of 26.0 square miles. It combines New England traditions with a progressive allitude. Citizens have consistently favored positive action on zoning and other decisions concerning industrial growth. A fifteen-memher elected Town Council and an appointed Town Administrator are dedicated to serving the needs of the progressive community. Franklin is at the virtual center of the "Golden Triangle," 28 miles from Boston, 26 miles from Providence, R.I., and 26 miles from Worcester. This puts the town within ea.~y reach of all the facilities offered by the metropolitan areas. Interstate 495 and State Route 140 virtually bisect Franklin. Interstate 495 provides easy access to the nation's major trucf routes, including Interstate 95 and the Massachusetts Turnpike (Interstate 90). Franklin lies directly on the recently rebuilt Midland rail line, offering Boston and Maine passenger service and Conrail freight service to Boston, Providence, and all points beyond. Piggyback cargo service is available in Providence. Uke the town itself, Franklin's education system is based on sturdy tradition combined with forwardlooking values. Horace Mann, the father of American public education, was born in Franklin in 1796. In addition, one of the town's eight elementary schools, 'The Brick School," has been in continuous session since 1833, and has been declared a National Historic Landmark. There are a number of outdoor recreltii'Jnal facilities in Franklin. Fletcher Field, near the center of town, boasts regulation baseball diamonds and little league fields, as well as tennis, basketball, and bocce courts. Dean Junior College and both high schools also have extensive athletic facilities. Above all, Franklin's town-wide altitude welcomes new industry and development. Local boards, commissions, officials, and townspeople share a common commitment ... to help you grow with Franklin. .. I Dear Subsistence Specialist, The attached shopping list now cont81ns 8dditionu which will include HYT (thlaugh July 01, 1995). thus supet'ced~ng the previous list. If you have not updated your ADC for this rotation perJod, this shopping list should help you decido. The procedure for selection should be: make ffl your most desired choice, down to the ff8 choice (that being, one you still would take if all else is taken). Don't place all your hope on #1. As the process continues, I will be selecting "bcHlies" for "billets" based upon this ADe. (Example: Query - CGC Juniper - 551 - list) If your name comes up requesting the Ju~ipBr as ~~ur first choice with someone elses; who has first precedence? ffl - LORAN (there are only 4 left with 55) #2 - OVERSEAS AFLOAT #3 - INCONUS AFLOAT ff4 OVERSEAS ASHORF. ") 115 - ASHORE tit '\\-tiS rS ~t.lY p~c.--Cc.'-(]O"C;:: ( (-1"''--'' Lv,- "') . I f no one with a higher precedence than yc>u wantf: that billet - you get it. I f more than one from the seme PI' ;:lcedenc:El requests any billet, however. my job 1s to fit the job to tho member. I will consider sea time/shore time/training/CO's recomnwnd9tion and Bny other information relating to yo~ specific~lly. Billets ere designed for Coast Guard members and, as such, are not specifically designed for mele/famale axclJsively. If you chose a billet and the unit cannot accommod~te YOll. I cannot assign you there. Plain and simple. Bet~leen Nov 01 and Dec 31, 1994. I will be, searchJ.ng for names to billets on the shopping list. If I come L~ with no names for a billet, I'll let you knml. Check the vole:,a mail 51hopping list during this time/as wall as the updated fax. If you don't get your ADC in by Nov 01, you don't get a choic.a!!! Once the search of billets is made, and I ~nticip~te no changes, Jan 01 (realistically Jan 02 1995) ii. the ACT iJhase 01' S?EAR and I will commence cutting orders. YOI' choice ill - #8 ShOllld be where you are going. If 1 cannot assign you to your ffl - ffB, I will call you and thftD we can di,;cuss what's avail'3ble. pr,E.\SE, DC NO'r CALL DURING THIS PERIOD. [WILL CALL YOU IF NECESSARY. Expect qO to 120 days (or more in some cases) between ~he date y~ur orders are issued and your reporting date. Thank you for all you have done at your cu~rent unit.
