of the County Comntissiouers of each county itt this State to appoint a sufficient number of suitable persons
iu each to~~~uship and ward of their count}~, other than those prescribed by law for paupers and the custod}- of
criminals, to look after and cause to be buried, in a deeeut attd respectable n:anuer, in any cemetery or burial
ground within this State, other than those used exclusively for the burial of the pauper dead, at an expense
to their county not exceeding thirt}~ five doilars, the body of an}- honorably discharged soldier, sailor or
marine, who served in the army ur uav~~ of the >/nited States during the late rebellion, or any preceding ~~~ar,
and shall hereafter die iu their county, leaving iusuflicieut means to defray the necessary burial expenses ;
and the persons so appointed shall hold their offices at the pleasure of the County Commissiuners, and shall
serve without compensation.
SF~c'rio~t 2. It shall be the duty of the persons so appointed in each township and ward of each
county, befure assuming the charge at.d exl;euse of the burial of the belly of an~• soldier, sailor or marine in
their tot~~nship or ~~~ard under the provisions of this act, to first satisfy themselves, by a careful inquir}- into
and examination of all the circumstances in the case of such deceased soldier, sailor or marit;e, whose belly
they are c_all~3 upon to b.try, serv°~,l iu the ar;ny or navy of the United States during the late rebellion, or
any prcc~cliii~ ti~ar, and ~~~as honorably discharged, at:d died in their to~rrshi-p or ~i°ard, leaving insufficient
means tu~,~ti°°.~~~ tlae necessary burial expenses ; s~~hereupo~.,, ~f the}~ are satisfied such facts etiist, they shill
take charge ~~i~ the bod~• of such deceased soldier, sailor or marine and cause it to be buried in the, ntanuer
uteutione~t in the first section of this act, and thereupon they shall iunnediately report their actions in the
case to the County Commissioners of their county, setting Furth the facts ascertained by them, together ~~~itlt
the name, rani: and command to ~~•hich such deceased soldier, sailor or marine belon;~td at the time of his
discharge, and the date of his discharge, the character of his occupation immediately preceding his death,
the date of his death and place of his burial, and also an accurately itemized statement of the expenses in-
curred in ar,d about such burial ; which report shall he duly attested by three reputable persons of full age
residing in the tu~~~nship or ward in ~ehich such deceased soldier, sailor or marine died, ktto~cing the fret that
such deceased soldier, sailor or marine died ~~•ithout sufficient means to defray the necessary burial expenses.
S)~C"PION 3. It shall be the duty of the County Commissioners of each county of this State, upon re-
ceiving the reports and statements of expenses from their appointees under the provisions of this act, to
transcribe in a book to be kept for the purpose, all the facts contained in such reports and statements, and to
draw ~earrauts upon the treasurer of their courrt~- for the pa}-meat of such expenses not exceeding, however,
the said cunt of thirt~•-five dollars on each body buried in accordance with the provisions of this act, to be
paid out of the fund of the county, and such ~n-arrauts shall be made payable to the persons appointed under
the provisions of this act, ~~~ho shall have buried the bodies for ~ehich the ~~•arrants are to be dra~~~n.
S>c'riorr 4. It shall also be the duty of the County Commissioners of each county in this State, upon
the death of any Soldier, sailor or marine ~~•ithin their county, who shall be buried under the provisions of
this act, to cause a headstone to be placed at the head of the grace of each deceased soldier, sailor or marine,
containing his Warne, and, if possible, the or<~anization to which he belonged or in ~chich he served, to be of
such material and design as they tray deem suitable, and the expense of the same shall be paid out of the
funds of the county in ~~~hich such soldier, sailor or marine died : Proz~idc=d, Iro«~cz~er, That the expense shall
not exceed the sum of fifteen dollars for such headstone, and the County Commissioners of each count}-, act-
ing under this section, shall draw a ~~~arrant on the treasurer of their county for the pa}-went of such expense,
in favor of the party or parties furnishing such headstone.
