AssentGly ~~aeL, caiad it i,; here5~~ e~uzcfed Gy flae autlaorih~ of floc same, That it shall be the duty of the Count}° Commissioners of each county in this State to appoint a sufficient number of suitable persons in each township and «°ard of their county, other than those pre~crihed by law for paupers and the custody of critniuals, to look after and cause to be buried, in a cleceut auci respectable manner, in any cemetery or burial ground ~yitliin this State, other than these u5ecl exclusively for the burial of the pauper dead, at an expense to their couuty not exceeding thirty-five dollars, the body of any honorably discharged soldier, sailor or marine, who served in the army or navy of the United States daring the late rebellion, or any preceding war, and shall hereafter die iu their couuty, leaving insufficient means to defray the accessary burial expenses ; and the persons so appointed shall hold their offices at the pleasure of tiie Conuty Commissioners, and shall serve without cou~l'~ensation. 5>rcTloti ~. It shall be the duty of the persons so appointed in each township and ward of each couuty, before assuming the charge and expense of tl;e burial of the body of any soldier, sailor or marine in their township or ward under the provisions of this act, to first satisfy themselves, by a careful inquiry into and examination of all the circumstances in the case of such deceased soldier, sailor or marine, whose body they are called upon to bury, served in the army or nary of the united Mates during the late rebellion, or guy preceding war, and was honorably discharged, and died in their township or ward, leaving insufficient means to defray tl:e.uecessary burial expeuse5 : ~yliere.upou, if they are satisfied. such facts exist, they shall take charge cf the body of such deceased soldier, sailor or marine and cause it to be buried in the manner mentioned in the first section of this act, and thereupon they shall inuueciiately report their actions in the case to the County. Coutmissicners of their couuty, setting forth the facts ascertained by them, together with the name, rank and command to which such deceased soldier, sailor or marine belonged at the time of his discharge, and the date of his discharge, the character of his occupation iiumediately preceding his death, the date of his death and place of his burial, and also an accurately itemized statement of the expenses in- curred iu and about such burial ; which report shall be duly attested by three reputable persons of full age residing iu the totvnsl~~ip or ward iu which such deceased soldier, sailor or marine died, kuo~ying the fact that such deceased soldier, sailor or marine died without sufficient means to defray the neees~ary burial expenses. ~rtc'riov 3. It sha1L be the dutti~ of the Cotvity Couunissioners of each county of this State, upon re- ceiving the reports and statements of expenses from their appointees under the provisions of this act, to transcribe in a boot: to be kept for the purpose, all the facts contained in such reports and statements, and to draw warrants upon the treasurer of their county for the payment of such expenses not exceeding, however, the said sum of thirty-five dollars on each body buried in accordance with tl~e provisions of this act, to be paid out of the fund of the couuty, and such warrante shall be made pa}able to the persons appointed under the provisions of this act, who shall h;n•e buried the bcdies for tvl~ich the warrants are to be drawn. SLCTIOS .}.
