AN ACT.
Authorising and requiring the County Commissioners of each counts in the State to appoint a sut~icient number of suitable
persons itt each township and ward of their county, at the expense of the counts-, to look after, bur}• and provide a
lreadstoue fur the body of ant honorably discharged wldier, sailor or marine who scr~-ed in the army or nave of the United
atatcs during the late rebellion or any preceding war, and shall thereafter die in their counts, leaving insulTicient means to
detiay the nccc~sary burial expenses.

of the County Couunissiouers of each county iu this State to appoint a sufficient number of suitable persons
in each township and teard of their county, other than those prescribed by law for paupers and the custody of
criminals, to Tool: after and cause to be buried, in a decent and respectable manner, in any cemetery or burial
ground tvitltin this State, other than tlrnse used exclusively for the burial of the pauper dead, at au expense
to their count} not exceeding thirty-five dollars, the body of any honorably discharged soldier, sailor or
marine, n•ho served in the army ur uac}- of the United States during the 1:-ite rebellion, or an~~ preceding war,
and shall hereafter die iu their cuuuty, leaving insufficient means to defray the necessar}' burial expenses ;
and the persons so appointed shall hold their offices at the pleasure of the County Commissioners, and shall
serve without compeusation-
S>rc'rrQ~ ~. It shall be the duty of the persons so appointed in each to~~~n~hin and ~t~ard of each
count}•, before assuming the charge and expense of the burial of the body of any soldier, sailor or marine in
their totvuslrip or ward under the provisions of this act, to first satisfy themselves, by a careful inquiry into
and esawination of all the circumstances in the case of such deceased soldier, sailor or marine, whose body
they are called upon to bury, served iu the army or navy of the United States during the late rebellion, or
an}- preceding tt•ar, and teas ironorat~l}• discharged, and died in their totvnslrip or ward, leaving insufficient
weans to defra_t- the necessary burial expenties ; tvltereupou, if they arc satisfied Such frets exist, they shall
rake charge of the hutiy of such deceased soidfeP; saiior or nuu-iue and cause it to be buried to the manner
mentioned iu the first section of this act, and thereupon they shall inrweciiately report their actions in the
case to the County Commissioners of their county, setting forth the facts ascertained b}• ,hem, together tt°ith
the uanre, rank and connriaud to tyl~ich such deceased soldier, sailor or marine belonged at the time of his
dischar;;e, and the date of his discharge, the charact«~r of his occupation immediately preceding his death,
the date of his death and place of leis burial, and also au accurately itemized statement of the expenses in-
curred in and about such burial ; which report shall be duly attested by three reputable persons of full age
residing in the totvuship or ward in tt~hich such deceased soldier, sailor or marine died, knowing the fact that
such deceased soldier, sailor or marine died without sufllcient means to defray the necessar}~ burial expenses.
Sr.c'rtox 3. It shall be the duty of the Cuuuty Commissioners of each county of this State, upon re-
ceit•ing the reports and statements of expenses from their appointees under the provisions of this act, to
transcribe in a book to be kept for the purpose, all the f;-sets contained in such reports and statc•n:ents, and to
draw warrants upon the treasurer of their county for the payment of such expenses not exceeding, however,
the said stun of thirty-five dollars on each body buried iu accordance with the provisions of this act, to be
paid out of the fund of the county, and such tvarrantt• shall be made payable to the persons appointed tinder
the provisions of this act, who shall hate buried the bodies for tyhich the warrants are to be drawn.
Srrrios :}. It shall also be tyre duty of the County Couuuissioners of each county in this State, upon
the death of any soldier, sailor or marine within their county, t~-ho shall he buried under the provisions of
this act, to cause a headstone to be placed at the head of the ~rtve of each deceased soldier, sailor or marine,
containing his Warne, and, if po>sible, the organi-ration to which he belonged or in tyhich he served, to he of
such material and design as they nra}° deem suitable, and the expense of the same shall be paid out of the
funds of the county iu which such soldier. sailor or marine died ; Proz~idea', Irosc~e~~cr, That the expense shall
nut exceed the stun of fifteen dollars for such headstone, and the County=Commissioners of each county, act-
ing under this section, shall draty a tyarraut on the treasurer of their county for tL•e pa}•ment of such expenas,
in favor of the parl}~ or parties furnishing such headstone,
