Authorizing and rc~luirin~ the County Commissioners of each county in the State to appoint a sufficient number of suitable
persons iu each tu~cuship and ward of their count}-, at the expense of the county, to ]ooh after, bury and proside a
headstone fur the hods- of any honorably discharged soldier, sailor or marine who sersed in the army or navy of the i'nited
States during the late rebellion or any preceding ~a~ar, and shall thereafter die in their counts, leaving insufficicut means to

of the County Commissioners of each count}~ in this State to appoint a sufficient number of suitable persons
in each tu~i•uship auci ~varcl of their count}•, other than those prescribed by law for paupers and the cu5tod_v of
criminals, to look after and cause to be buried, in a decent and respectable manner, iu any cemetery or hnrial
ground within this State, other than these used exciusivel}~ for the burial of the pauper dead, at an expense
to their county not exceeding thirty-fine dollars, the burly of an}~ honorably discharged soldier, sailor or
marine, ~elw served iu the army or nays of the United States during the late rebellion, or any preceding war,
and ,hall hereafter clie in their couuty, leasing iusut3icieut ute;:ins to defra}• the necessary burial expenses ;
and the per~ous so appointed shall hold their offices at the pleasure of the County Commissioners, and shall
scree without compensation.
5r:crrox z. It shall he the duty of the persons so appointed iu each to~suship and ward of each
county, before assuming the charge and expense of'•tl~e burial of the body of any soldier, sailor or marine in
their township or ward cinder the provisions of this act, to first satisfy themselves, by a careful inquiry into
and examination of all the circumstances in the case of such deceased soldier, sailor or marine, whose hods
they are called upon to bury, served in the arnn• or nasv of the United States during the ]ate rebellion, or
any preceding war, and was i~ouorabls discharged, and died in their to~suship or ward, leasing insull=,cient
means to defray the necessary burial expenses ; wliereupou, if they a*~ satis5ed such facts exist, they shall _ _• _ _ ~
take charge of the burly of such deceased soldier, sailor or marine and cause it to be buried in the manner
mentioned in the first section of this act, and thereupon they shall innnediatel}~ report their actions in the
case to the County Commissioners of their couuty, setting forth the facts ascertained by them, together ~sith
the came, rank and command to ~sliich such deceased soldier, sailor or marine belonged at the time of his
dischar;;e, and the date of his discharge, the character of his occupation immediately preceding his death,
the date of his death and place of leis burial, and also an accurately itemized statement of the expenses in-
curred iu and about such burial ; which report shall be dins attested by three reputable persons of full age
residing iu the township or ward in which such deceased soldier, sailor or marine died, knowing the fact that
such deceased soldier, sailor or marine died without su{Iicieut means to defray the necessary burial expenses.
Sfte'riox ,;. It shall be the duty of the County Commissioners of each county of this State, upon re-
ceisin~~ the reports and statements of expenses from their appointees under the provisions of this act, to
transcribe in a book to be kept for the purpe~e, all the facts contained in such reports and statements, and to
drays ~sarrants upon the treasurer of their count}• for the payment of such expenses not exceeding, ]~ou~ever,
the said sum of thirty-five dollars on each body buried iu accordance with the prosisions of this act, to be
paid out of the fund of the couuty, and such warrante shall be made payable to the persons appointed under
the provisions of this act, ~sho shall have buried the bodies far ~~hich the ~z•anants are to be drawn.
St:cTro~ .}. It shall also be the duty cif the County Conuiiissioners of each county in this State, upon
tl~e death of any soldier, sailor or marine within their county, ~sho shall he buried under the provisions of
this act, to cause a headstone to be placed at the ]lead of the grave of each dece~ised soldier, sailor or marine,
containing his name, acid, if possible, the organization to ~~-hich he belonged or in «~hich he served, to be of
such material and design as tlieti• may deem suitable, and the expense of the sane shall be paid out of the
funds of the couuty in ~eliich such soldier. sailor or marine died ; Prn~rdecl, horcever, That the expense shall
not exceed the sum of fifteen dollars for such headstone, and the Count}~~= Commissioners of each c~nmty, act-
ing under this section, shall draw a warrant ou the treasurer of their county fur the payment of such expenas,
in fasor of the party or partic~ fiin~ishi ng such headstone,
