SEC"1'IQti z. It shall be the duty of the persons so appointed in e:~ich to~ynship and ward of each county, before assuiuiug the charge aml expense of the burial of the body of any soldier, sailor or marine in their to~suship or w:u-d under tl~e provisions of this act, to ftst satisfy themselves, by a careful inquiry into and examination of all the circumstances in the case of such deceased soldier, sailor or marine, whose body they are called upon to bury, served iu the army or nary of the United States during tl~e ]ate rebellion, or any preceding war, and was i~ouorahly discharged, and died in their to~ynship or yard, leaning insufTicient means to defray flee ueeessnry burial expenses : ~yhereupuu, if they are satisfied such facts exist, they shall take charge of the h,xly of such deceased soldier, saiior or marine and cause it to be buried in the manner mentioned in the first section of this act, and thereupon they shall inuneciiately report their actions iu the case to the Cuuuty Commissioners of their county, setting forth the facts ascertained by them, together with the name, rank and command to which Such deceased soldier, sailor or marine belonged at the time of his discharge, acid t};e date of his discharge, the charact«~r cf his occupation immediately preceding his death, the date of his death and place of leis burial, auc: also an accurately itemized statement of the expenses in- curred in and ahcnit such burial ; ~yhich report shall be dul}~ attested by three reputable persons of full age residing in the township or ward in which such deceased soldier, sailor or marine died, kno~~~ing the fact that such deceased soldier, sail~~~r or marine died without sufficient means to defray the neees~arv burial expenses. It shall be the duty of the County Commissioners of each county of this State, upon re- ceiving the reports and statements of expenses from their appointees under the provisions of this act, to transcribe in a book to be kept for the purpose, all the f::ets contained in such reports and statements, and to dra~ti• warrants upon the treasurer of their count}- for the payment of such expenses not exceeding, However, the said sum of thirty-five dollars on each body buried iu accordance with the provisions of this act, to be paid out of the fund of the county, and such warrants shall be made payable to the persons appointed under the provisions of this act, who shall leave buried the bodies for which tl;e warrants are to be drawn. It shall also be flee duty of the County Commissioners of each county in this State, upon the death of any soldier, sailor or marine ~yithiu their county, who shall rie buried under the provisions of this act, to cause a headstone to he placed at the head of the grace of each deceased soldier, sailor or mari~ze, containing his name, and, if possible, the organization to which he belonged or in w}iich he served, to he of such material and design as they may deem suitable, and the expense of the same shall be paid out of the funds of flee county iu which such soldier. sailor or marine died : Pro~~idcd, hosve~~er, 'T'hat the expense shall not exceed the sum of fifteen dollars for such headstone, .out the Countv.Comu~issioners of each county, act- in},r under this section, shall draw a warrant on the treasurer of their county for the payment of such expenss, in favor of the party or pariies furnisl~iug such headstone, BECAME A LAW OVER VETO OF GOVERNOR, MAY 12, ta?>=5. ,:~~~rgc~tio~t f®~1 u~~i~i of ~ece~sea ~olaier.
