Sr,cTtov z. he it e~tacfed Gt- llre Scrzalc and Nurse of 1:~•f~rese~rlali~~es of the Co~nnzo>t~eealtlr of Penns~~l- vauia, in Ge~aeral AssenaGl}~ ~~ael, card if is /eere5}~ eia zcEc~d by the artllaorify o% the same, That it shall be the duty of the County Contntissioners of each county iu this State to appoint a sufficient number of suitable persons iu each township aucl ward of their county, other than those prescribed by law for paupers and the custody of criminals, to loop after and cause to be buried, in a decent and respectable manner, in any cemetery or burial ground ~yithin this State, other than these used exclusively for the burial of the pauper dead, at an expense to their count}- not exceeding thirt~~-five dollars, the body of any honorable discharged soldier, sailor or tnariue, who served in the ante- or navy of the United States duriug the late rebellion, or any preceding war, and shall hereafter die in their county, ]caring insufficient means to defray the necessary burial expenses ; and the persons so appointed shall hold their offices at the pleasure of the County Cuntmissiouers, and shall serve ~yititout coutpensatiou. SEC'rtw z. It shall be the duty of the persons so appointed iu each township and ward of each county, before assuming the charge and expense of the burial of the body of guy soldier, sailor or tnariue iu their township or ward under the provisions of this act, to first satisfy thentselyes, by a careful inquiry into and exatuiuation of ell the circumstances in the rase of such deceased soldier, sailor or marine, ~yhose body they are called npou to bury, served in the arnn• or nary of the United States during the late rebellion, or any preceding .ear, and ryas honorably discharged, and died in their to~ynship or teard, leaving insufficient means to defray the accessary burial expenses : ~yhereupuu, if they are satisfied such facts exist, they- shall take charge of rite h,~dy of such decesseci soldier, saiior or marine and cause it to he buried in the manner mentioned iu the first section of this act, and thereupon they shall immediately report their actions in the case to the County Commissioners of their county, setting forth the facts ascertained by them, together ~yith the Warne, rank and command to ~yhiclt such deceased soldier, sailor or marine belonged at the time of his discltar;e, and the date of his discharge, the characttcr of his occupation immediately preceding his death, the date of his death and place of ltis burial, and also an accurately itemized statement of the expenses in- curred in and about such burial ; ~yhich report shall be duly attested by three reputable persons of full age residing iu the township or ward in ~yhich such deceased soldier, sailor or marine died, knowing the fact that such deceased soldier, sailer or tnariue died withcmt sufficient means to defray the necessar}- burial expenses. S;~:c'r1o~ 3. It shall be the dot}• of the County Commissioners of each county of this State, upon re- ceiying the reports and statements of expenres front their appointees antler the provisions of this act, to transcribe in a book to be kept for the purpose, all the facts contained in such reports and statements, and to draw warrants upon the treasurer of their county for the payment of such expenses not exceeding, however, the said stun of thirty-fire dollars on each body buried iu accordance with the provisions of this act, to be paid out of the fund of the county, and such warrant:; shall be made payable to the persons appointed under the provisions of this act, tyho shall have buried tl:e bcdies for ~~hich the warrants ate to be drt~yn. It shall also be the duty of the County Commissioners of each county in this State, upon the death of any soldier, sailor or tnariue ~yithin their county, who shall he buried under the provisions of this act, to cause a headstone to he placed at the head of the nrave of each deceased soldier, sailor or marine, containing his came, and, if possible, the organization to ~yhich he belonged or in which he served, to be of such material and design as they Wray deem suitable, and the expense of the same shall be paid out of the fends of the couute iu which such soldier. sailor or tnariue died : Prodded, Ieo~e~e~~er, That the espouse shall not exceed the stun of fifteen dollars for such headstone, and the County=~Comntissioners of each crntuty, act- ins; under this section, shall dray a ~yarrant on the treasurer of their county for the pa}•tneut of such expenas, in favor of the party or parties fitrnisltiug such headstone, BECAME A LAW OVER VETO OF GOVERNOR, NAY 12, t 8E5. ~~~~J~ICA~IOri fOL' ~uttat of ~eee~sea ~oi~ier.
