of the County Cuinmissioners of each county iu this State to appoint a sufficient number of suitable persons
iu each to~yuship and ward of their county, other than those prescribed by law for paupers and the custody of
criminals, to loop after and cause Yo be buried, iu a decent and respectable manner, iu any cemetery or burial
around within this State, other the-ul these used exclusively for the burial of the pauper dead, at au expense
to their county not exceeding thirty-five dollars, the body of any honorably discharged soldier, sailor or
inariue, who served iu the army or uasy of the United States during the late rebellion, or any preceding- war,
and shall hereafter die in their count~•, leasing iusuiicient mesas to defray the necessary burial expenses ;
and the persons so appointed shall hull their offices at the pleasure of the County Commissioners, and shall
serse without compensation.
S>~cTrQx ~. It shall be the duty of the persons so appointed in each to~enship and ward of each
count}~, before assuming the charge and expense of the burial of the body of any soldier, sailor or marine in
their township or ward under the provisions of this act, to first satisfy thriuselves, by a careful incfuiry into
and examination of all the circumstances in the case of such deceased soldier, sailor or marine, whose body
they are called upon to bury, served in the arnn~ or navy of the United States during the late rebellion, or
an}- preceding tsar, and ~sas houoral~ly discharged, and died in their township or ward, leasing insufficient
means to defray the accessary burial expenses ; whereupon, if they are satisfied such facts exist, they shall
take charge of the body of such deceased soldier, sailor or marine and cause it to he buried in the manner
mentioned in the first section of this act, and thereupon they shall immediately report their actions in the
case to the County Commissioners of their counts, setting forth the facts ascertained by them, together with
the name, rank and command to which such deceased soldier, sailor or inariue lelonged at the time of his
discharge, and the date of his discharge, the ci~arict+~r of his occupation immediately preceding his death,
the date of his death an<l place of his burial, and also au accnratc~ly itemized statement of the expenses in-
curred iu and about such burial ; which report shall be duly attested by three reputable persons of full age
residing in the township or ~sard in ~yhich such deceased soldier, sailor or marine died, knowing the fact that
such deceased soldier, sailor or marine died without sufficient means to defray the necessare burial expenses.
Sr:c'r>o~ ;,. It shall be the duty of the Count}• Cou~mi.=sinners of each county of this State, upon re-
ceising the reports and statements of expenses from their appointees under the prosisions of this act, to
transcribe in a book to he kept for the purpose, all the facts contained in such reports and statements, and to
draw ~yarrants upon the treasurer of their county for the payment of such expenses not exceeding, howeser,
the said sum of thirty-file dollars ou each body buried in accordance with the provisions of this act, to be
paid out of the fund of the county, and such warrant: shall he made payable to the persons appointed raider
the provisions of this act, who shall base buried the bodies for «hich the cyan-ants are to be dra~1•n.

this act, to cause a headstone to he placed at the head of the grace of each deceased soldier, sailor or inariue,
containing his name, aid, if possible, the organization to ~yhich he belonged or iu which he served, to be of
such material and design as thcs mss deem suitable, and the expense of the carne shall be paid out of the
funds of the county in which such soldier. sailor or inariue died ; Provi«'cd, Iro«~evcr, That the expense shall
not exceed the sum of fifteen dollars fur such headstone, and the County-Commissioners of each county, act-
ing under this section, shall draw a ~yarrant on the treasurer of their county for the pad meet of such expenas,
in favor of the party or ~;arties furnishing such headstone,
