criminals, to loom after and cause to be bnr:ed. in a'~eE;ent and respectable manner, iu guy cemetery or burial
ground ~rithin this State, other than th~~s`e t ;eel csrh~si'cely for the burial of the pauper dead, at an expense
to their county not exceeding thirty-fire c~jollar;, the hudy of any honorably discharged soldier, sailor or
marine, u•I~to screed iu the arm} or navy of ,~}te United States during the late rebellion, or au~~ preceding war,
and shall hereafter die in their county, leavi}~a insufficient means to defray the necessary burial expenses ;
and the persons so appointed shall hold theirloffices at the pleasure of the County Commissioners, and shall
sen~e ~vitltout compensation. a
SECI'Iw ~. It shall be the duty of the persons so appointed in each township and ward of each
county, before assuming the charge and expense of the burial of the body of any soldier, sailor or marine in
their to~~-uship or ward under the prorisions dt this act, to first sattisfv themselves, b}~ a careful inquiry into
and examination of all the circumstances in the case of such deceased soldier, Sailor or marine, hose body
tier are called upon to bury, served in the army or nary of the United States during tl~e latebellion, or
any preceding ~rar, and ts•as i~onorablr dischargec3,:ar.>~Ciied iu their township or ~rard, leavkng tnsut~icient
means to defray the necessary burial expenses : ~rhere u, if they are satisfied such facts exist, they shall
tape eitarge of the body cf such deceased suldicr, s::ilor ~r ma.-ine and cau~:e it to he buried i» the ma~;ner
mentioned in the first section of this act, and thereupon they shall immediately report their actions in the
case to the County Conuuissioners of their county, setting forUi the facts ascertained by them, together with
the came, rsnk and comut~u~d to whicH such deceased soldier, sailor or marine belonged at the time of his
discharge, and the date of his discharge, the character cf his occupation immediate]} preceding his death,
the date of bis death and place of his burial, anc'. also an eccnrately itemized statement of the expenses in-
curred in and about such burial ; which report shall be duly attested by three reputable persons of full age
residing in the township or ward in whicH such deceased soldier, sailor or marine died, kno~ring the fact that
such deceased soldier, sailor or tuariue died without sufficient means to defray the necessary burial expenses.
SIiCTIO~ ,;. It shall be the duty of the Count}- Corumissiouers of each county of this State, upon re-
ceiving the reports and statements of expenses from their appointees ender the proyisio~s of this act, to
transcribe in a book to be kept for the purpose, all the facts contained in such reports and statements, and to
dratir ~rarrants upon the treasurer of their couch- fur the payment of such expenses not exceeding, ho~~•ever,
the said sutra of thirty-fire dollars on each body buried in accordance n•itl~ the provisions of this act, to be
paid out of the fluid of the county, and such ~rarrant:'~ shall be made pa}•ahle to the persons appointed under
the provisions of this act, wHo shall have buried the bodies for ~~~l;ich the ~rarrants are to be dra~rn.
Si?rriox .}. It shall also be the duty of the County Conuuissioners of each county in this State, upon
the death of au~~ soldier, sailor or marine within their count}•, wl~o shall be buried under the prorisions of
this act, to cause a Headstone to he placed at tl~e head of the grace of each deceased soldier, sailor or marine,
cotrtainiug his Warne, and, if possible, the organization to which he belonged or in which he served, to he of
such material and design as the}> mar deem suityble, at~d the expense of the same shall be paid out of the
funds of the county in which such soldier. sailor or tuariue died ; Provided, ho<c~erer, THat tlae expense shall
not exceed the sum of fifteen dollars for sucH headstone, and the County. Commissioners of each county, act-
ing under this section, shall draw a ~rarrant cui the treasurer of their counh~ for the pa~•meut of such expenas,
